Climate transitions across the Cenozoic; insight from elemental ratios in benthic Foraminifera and marine gastropods

The Cenozoic climate record derived from the oxygen isotope ratios of benthic foraminifera (delta (super 18) O (sub b) ) displays several short term steps signifying the glaciation of Antarctica and the development and intensification of large scale Northern Hemisphere glaciation, termed hereafter the late Pliocene transition and mid-Pleistocene transition, respectively. The interpretation of the delta (super 18) O (sub b) record, which is controlled by both temperature and the oxygen isotopic composition of seawater is, however, not straightforward.
