Based on the high-resolution pollen record and oxygen isotope analysis of ODP Site 1144, the authors studied the evolution of vegetation around the northern South China Sea and its response to global climate change during the last interglacial period and the penultimate glaciation. A comparison of pollen zones and oxygen isotope stages shows that during the transition period from the penultimate glaciation to the last interglacial period, the change in climate from cold to warm began earlier in low latitude areas than in high latitude areas.
