Abstract:
Some 3250 line-km of 96 and 120-channel seismic reflection data was shot in the Canterbury Bight, offshore Canterbury, by the R/V Maurice Ewing in 2000. This data was collected by the University of Texas and was designed to image the Neogene portion of the succession, specifically Miocene sediment drifts in the upper 2 s (TWT). Vertical resolution is approximately 5 m within the upper second. Preliminary results of this work on the sediment drifts has been published elsewhere. The Maurice Ewing data set has been used to map stratal architectures in the Quaternary interval of the outer shelf and upper slope region, approximating the upper 400 ms. These data have been tied to the ODP 1119 drill site, for which there is a well constrained chronology and lithological characterisation for the Quaternary and Pliocene to a TD of 404 m. A approximately 100 km (super 2) region in the vicinity of ODP 1119 was selected in this study, from which seismic stratal elements were defined, and seismic intervals mapped.
