Abstract:
The Quaternary diatom record from the Southern Ocean contains critical information for interpreting paleoclimate variations as applicable to modern climate change. The biogeography, past sea-surface temperatures and sea ice patterns are discussed, along with the use of Antarctic diatoms as tracers of bottom water. Fresh water diatoms from nonmarine Antarctic waters are described. (mte)
