187th voyage of JOIDES Resolution was in Australian-Antarctic discordance zone where basalt heterogeneity in different segments of mid-ocean ridges was discovered. Data collected during this voyage gives opportunity to expect different mantle sources, and also possibilities to study composition and physical properties of upper mantle. Antarctic glaciation was the topic of the 188th voyage of JOIDES Resolution. Antarctic continent with its thick ice sheet and surrounding ocean is very important for understanding of the planetary climate formation and global ocean circulation. Circum-polar Antarctic current gives thermal isolation to the continent, and causes sudden latitude-thermal gradient in the ocean, which is the reason for intense atmospheric and ocean circulation. Many years of research revealed that Antarctic glaciation begun in second half of Paleogene and was especially intense in Cenozoic.
