The Pliocene-Quaternary average annual paleotemperatures of the surface water were reconstructed on the basis of the quantitative analysis of the planktonic foraminiferal assemblages from deep-sea boreholes 953 (Canary Islands) and 806B (Equatorial Pacific Ocean). In both the North Atlantic Ocean and the Equatorial Pacific Ocean, the temperature fluctuations were severe, the amplitude of fluctuations goes from 3.5 to 5.5 degrees C, and the temperature is lower than at present in both areas. In the Late Pliocene, on the whole, the paleotemperature was higher than that in the Pleistocene.
