Abstract:
Scientific goals for Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 160 were to investigate the tectonic and paleoceanographic history of the Eastern Mediterranean Sea by drilling. The role and the evolution of the Eratosthenes Seamount (south of Cyprus) are a key to understand the tectonic evolution in this area. Combined analysis of Formation Microscanner (FMS (super TM) ) and conventional logging data are used to study the carbonate facies of the Miocene section, intersected at two drill sites on the Eratosthenes Seamount. Main aim of this study was to characterize the facies of the Miocene carbonate section at both drill sites. An additional objective was to determine the possible facies relationships of the shallow water Miocene carbonates recovered at these two sites. The logging data allow a reconstruction of the low core recovered intervals of the Miocene facies at the Eratosthenes Seamount to be obtained. The facies characterization is based on the compositional features shown by the conventional logs and on the correlation of those with the sedimentary features recognizable on FMS images and with the measured dip patterns. Crossplotting and matrix inversion techniques applied on conventional logs were used to analyze the compositional trends and changes. It is interpreted that the section recovered at Sites 966 and 965 belong to the same depositional system. Uranium-rich facies are interpreted as related to lagoon environment and are dipping towards the NE. These are only represented at Site 966. Facies of low uranium content and dipping NW are likely to represent back-reef or reef facies and are represented at both Site 966 and Site 965.
