During the course of systematic biological investigation in the eastern Weddell Sea in 1998, a well preserved belemnite fragment was recovered from a bottom trawl. Subsequent examination indicated that this most likely has Late Jurassic-Early Cretaceous affinities. As such it comprises further evidence that Late-Jurassic-Early Cretaceous sedimentary rocks may be present along the eastern margins of the Weddell Sea.
