Introductory remarks concern research during the 1960's on geological and geophysical oceanography, the plate tectonics theory and the National Science Foundation's Deep Sea Drilling Project, incl summer 1970 drilling by the Glomar Challenger in the Labrador Sea. A hypothetical reconstruction of the regional geologic history supposes that the Labrador Sea floor was created during a period 60-40 M Y ago. Draws on the literature to describe the bathymetry of the Greenland and Baffin Island shelves, the Labrador coast and areas to the south.
