Abstract:
delta (super 13) C (org) and delta (super 15) N (org) isotopes and C/N ratios were measured to characterize the nature of sedimentary organic matter on the Blake Ridge. The delta (super 13) C (org) values had a mean of -21.97 per mil, and the delta (super 15) N (org) values had a mean of 5.62 per mil, while the delta (super 13) C (org) and delta (super 15) N (org) values are within the overlapping range of marine and terrestrially derived organic matter. Their mean values are closer to the mean values of typical marine organic carbon. The low C/N ratios, with a mean value of 8+ or -2, show that the organic matter in the sediments is fresh and has not been extensively recycled.
