Outlines topics from Antarctic Offshore Stratigraphy project (ANTOSTRAT) Offshore Drilling Workshop held in Siena, Italy, 10-14 May 1998. Leg 178, Antarctic Peninsula component of ANTROSTRAT plan, recovered 1806 m of core from nine sites to extract climate record over last 6-10myr. Selected areas will test earliest arrival of Antarctic ice, and ice sheet development. Ancillary shallow and short-core drilling recognised as necessary and complementary to deep and long-core drilling which is possible only through Ocean Drilling Program (ODP)
