Abstract:
Results of Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) from abyssal floors shows wide-spread distributions of shallow water sediments and volcanic detritus erupted within shallow environment. These sediments were mostly found on top of topographic highs such as on top of the seamounts and ridges which are believed to be sunken feature after succession of volcanic activities and/or formation of shallow marine facies. No clear relation is found between age of formation, distribution depth, and distance from mid-ocean ridge systems. Formation age not evenly dispersed throughout geological time rather restricted in certain geological eras. Most of these sediments were found in Cretaceous, Miocene, and Eocene sediments in descending order. The observed result that increase distribution depths of such sediments along with increasing ages implies step-by-step sealevel rise through geologic time.
