The intra-arc rifting in the Izu-Bonin arc occurred in the Pliocene, sometime between 3.56 and 1.1 Ma. Its basement consists of pyroclastic rocks and highly vesicular hydrous pyroclastic olivine-basalt that displays ocean floor tholeiitic affinities. The fore-arc basin was formed during mid-Oligocene and is the product of for-arc rifting. Its basement is formed of calc-alkaline and low-K tholeiitic basalts and andesites depleted in high field strength elements
