The first drilling of the oceanic crust in the Japan Sea was made during Leg ODP 127. There is, surprisingly, no typical oceanic crust in this marginal basin, but, instead, a thick alternation of sediments and basaltic lava flows and sills. These new data constrain very precisely the tectonic evolution of the basin from its opening during the Early and Middle Miocene until the active closing and formation of a new subduction zone
