The strata of the Maokou Formation in the Lower Permian at Laibin and the Upper Permian in the Matan area, Heshan Country, Guangxi Province are rich in trace fossils. All trace fossils were named as to genus. They are as follows (from top to bottom in the strata): a) Dalong Formation - Chondrities sp. Planolities sp. Rind Burrow in Reduction Burrow b) Changxing Formation - Planolites sp. Phycodes sp(?) c) Heshan Formation - Skolithos sp. d) Maokou Formation - Zoophycos sp. Skolithos sp. and U-shaped Burrow. A discussion of the discovered trace fossils and their environmental significance is an emphasis of this paper. 1. Skolithos ichnofossils facies consisting of skolithos sp. and U-shaped burrow are cylindrical holes burrowed by animals to escape from harmful environments. Therefore they are the characteristic trace fossils in the intertidal zone. 2. Zoophycos ichnofossil facies consist of zoophycos, small planolites and phycodes (?) Fodinichnia. They are trace fossils of a quiet, shallow sea environment. 3. Planolites ichnofossil facies consist of Planolites Rind Burrow and chondrites which occur in mudstone and siliciliths of the turbidites of the Dalong Formation. According to the data of DSDP these fossils occur mainly in deep sea mud, so in the case of Dalong Formation, they could be used as an indication of the sedimentary environment of deep water deposits.
