The age relationships of the petromagnetic and petrochemical characteristics of ocean basalts are studied, using specimens from a series of boreholes drilled from the vessel Glomar Challenger in the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. It has been shown that during the age span of 30-50 m.y. the maximum magnetization saturation and iron content has been observed and this maximum corresponds with the minimum spreading rate and rate of drift of paleomagnetic poles. The observed laws are global in character.--Modified journal abstract.
