Stratigraphic analyses of cores from Deep Sea Drilling Project. The older episode, Aptian to Cenomanian resulted in the formation of most of the oceanic plateaus. In the younger; Santonian to Maestrichtian, several island and seamount chains formed. These volcanic events covered an area of at least 30 X 10 (super 6) km (super 2) . Possibly, the older episode was responsible for a Cretaceous sea-level high and concomitant epicontinental transgression.--Modified journal abstract.
