DSDP sites 310, 464, 465, and 466; seismic-reflection profiles. Response of sedimentation to subsidence and northward movement of Hess Rise on the Pacific Plate. Three northwest-trending arms, or ridges, and an east-northeast-trending southern Hess Rise that parallels the Mendocino Fracture Zone. Tholeiitic basalt and alkalic basalt clasts within sediments. A major rock unit is Middle Cretaceous limestone, chalk, and minor chert. Organic-carbon-rich sediments. Sediments from across the Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary show a significant decrease in surface water temperature and biological productivity, and an abrupt increase in transition metals and iridium.--Modified journal abstract.
