Abstract:
A total of 348 sediment samples from the SW Pacific region, consisting of 181 surface or near-surface sediments from the SW Pacific, 65 samples from SW Pacific holes of the Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP), and 102 samples from the Ross Sea, have been analysed by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry for nine major elements and gravimetrically for % loss on ignition. A series of maps showing element distribution throughout the region has been prepared and the data have been subjected to statistical analysis.
