The Hawaiian and Phoenix lineation patterns of the western Pacific are the type localities for a time scale of magnetic reversals for the period 100-160 m.y. By analyzing these anomaly patterns, a relative stratigraphy of normal and reversed intervals has been derived for the M-reversal sequence. This stratigraphy has been placed in a geochronologic framework by analyzing the magnetic anomalies and basement ages in the vicinities of five DSDP holes. This analysis shows the M-reversal sequence to range in age from Oxfordian ( approximately 153 m.y.) to Aptian ( approximately 106 m.y.) and to be bounded both before and after by long intervals of normal magnetic polarity. Since the initial charting of the Phoenix lineations by Larson and others (1972), additional anomalies have been identified as M11 to M19 just east of the Gilbert Islands, and M11 to M25 have been mapped between the Marshall-Gilberts and the Ontong Java Plateau. The older of these anomalies (M20-M25) have a skewness (cross-sectional shape) indicating that these lineations were formed much closer to the paleo-equator than the eastern and younger portion of the pattern.
