Ten gas samples from DSDP site 147 contained 86-99% methane. The methane had delta 13C values between -59 and -76%o and delta D values of -178+ or -5%o. These values are consistent with an origin due to anaerobic microbial reduction of organic matter in the sediments. The carbon dioxide delta 13C and delta 18O values were both in the range +0.5%o and -4.5%o and both approached zero on the PDB scale as depth increased.
