Abstract:
We present a method for automatically associating Ocean Drilling Program core sample observations with interpreted rock type and other lithologic parameters. Lithology data are obtained from the visual core descriptions (VCDs) prepared by sedimentologists and petrologists at sea. A database is created using the digital AppleCORE data, which form the basis for the VCDs. The database is then queried from spreadsheets containing laboratory data for rock type information using the standard "depth below seafloor" parameter used for all shipboard laboratory data reporting. This method facilitates rapid sorting, plotting, and analysis of sample data as a function of lithology.
