Abstract:
MnO (sub 2) -encrusted nontronite mounds. Analyses are presented for Ca, Mg, Si, NH (sub 3) , Mn, and Fe. Results confirm conclusions that hydrothermal solutions enriched in Ca by 1-2 mM and depleted in Mg by approximately 2 mM are upwelling through the mounds and the surrounding pelagic sediments. Si, NH (sub 3) , and Mn (super 2+) concentrations generally increase upcore. The formation of nontronite (Fe(III) (sub 4) Si (sub 8) O (sub 20) (OH) (sub 4) ) involves oxidation of dissolved Fe (super 2+) . Fe (super 2+) oxidation by MnO (sub 2) and replacement of MnO (sub 2) by nontronite at the base of the MnO (sub 2) crust, followed by upward migration of Mn (super 2+) and precipitation of MnO (sub 2) at the sediment water surface.--Modified journal abstract.
