Abstract:
A major perturbation of the global carbon cycle 55 million years ago, believed to result from release of 1000-2000 Gt of C from methane hydrates, correlates with an intense but transient greenhouse warming event known as the Paleocene Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM). The rapid (105 years) recovery of global temperatures reflects important negative feedbacks in the climate system and carbon cycle. A new independent indicator, Sr/Ca in coccolith carbonate, which covaries with the productivity of coccolithophorid algae, is used to investigate the biotic response in the most complete PETM deep sea record which was recovered at ODP Site 690 in the Weddell Sea.
