Abstract:
Reverse variations in Globigerinoides ruber (pink color) in response to ice volume change (represented by delta (super 18) O) were recorded during Marine Isotope Stages 11-5e at ODP Site 1143 in the southern South China Sea (SCS) with a resolution of -2,000 years. The abundance of Globigerinoides ruber was higher during glacial periods and lower during interglacial periods, which is completely different from records from other regions. Sea Surface Temperature (SST), Depth of the Thermocline (DOT) and fragmentation of planktonic Foraminifera were calculated and compared in order to discuss their effects on changes in G. ruber. SST and fragmentation showed little oscillation over most of the time interval, whereas DOT showed strong fluctuation and was well correlated to G. ruber. DOT was more likely to have a profound impact on variations in G. ruber in the southern SCS.
