Abstract:
ODP Site 1144 (20 degrees C3.18'N, 117 degrees C25.14'E) is situated in the southeast of Dongsha Island on the northern margin of the South China Sea at a water depth of 2037 m. A composite section about 520 m long recovered from the site consists mainly of gray-green clay with quartz and calcite silt, as well as nannofossils and siliceous biota. The chronological framework for ODP Site 1144 was established based mainly on the planktonic stable oxygen isotope stratigraphy (Buhring et al., 2001) and a Pleistocene microtektite abundance event as well as planktonic faunal and floral biohorizons. The delta (super 18) O record of Globigerinoides ruber shows that oxygen marine isotopic stages (MISs) 11 to 29 are present in the lower part of the site at depths of 225.7-501.3 mcd. 240 samples were taken at 0.5-1.5 m intervals between 225.7 and 501.3 m for pollen studies. Based on the sedimentation rate generated by Buhring, pollen sample resolution averages about 602-15,357 a. Pollen preparation followed the standard procedure. Two exotic Locopodium tablets are added to each sample to calculate pollen concentrations (grains/ml). Pollen influx (grains/cm (super 2) /a) is available using the age model provided by Buhring.
