Abstract:
Concentrations of CaCO (sub 3) , total organic carbon, opal, and organic matter delta (super 13) C values in sediments from ODP Sites 1075 and 1077 off the mouth of the Congo River and Sites 1082 and 1084 under the Benguela Current have been employed to compare the histories of marine productivity over the past 1200 ky in these two different but related upwelling systems. Productivity has generally been higher at Sites 1082 and 1084 than near the Congo River because of upwelling associated with the Benguela Current. A common decrease of opal MAR at all four sites at around 900 ka probably was caused by relaxation in intensity of southeast Trade Wind intensity, which decreased upwelling along the Namib Margin and lowered delivery of moisture to the West African Monsoon. Paleoproductivity has increased in both systems since 250 ka, indicating reinvigoration of Trade Wind intensity.
