Abstract:
We measured magnetic susceptibility and natural gamma-ray (NGR) on the core recovered at the ANCORA drilling site as part of the New Jersey Coastal Plain Drilling Project (ODP Leg 174AX). The new measurements were successfully integrated with core lithology and the downhole NGR log. A simple linear model can explain most of the variation of the downhole NGR and of the magnetic susceptibility as consequence of the lithologic variation. Abrupt deviations from the average values of NGR activity and magnetic susceptibility determined by the linear model can be interpreted as undetected lithological changes. Spectral NGR at selected level showed that NGR activity is mostly due to 40K radioisotope associated with glauconite and clay which also tend to give high magnetic susceptibility. An anomalous level with high uranium concentration but not a parallel increase in magnetic susceptibility was found at 651 ft depth (Navesink/Mt. Laurel formations) corresponding to a major departure from the linear model.
