Abstract:
Models of the trophic resource continuum (TRC) predict aspects of nutrient cycling and oceanic circulation across the Paleocene/Eocene Epoch boundary. The abundance, diversity, and areal extent of oligotrophic planktonic foraminifera combined with the presence, but geographic compartmentalization of eutrophic planktonic foraminifera indicate the expansion of the TRC from late Paleocene to early Eocene time. Because development of oligotrophic habitats is maximal under poorly mixed conditions, we infer decreased intensity of oceanic mixing through the thermocline across the Paleocene/Eocene Epoch boundary.
