Abstract:
A multidisciplinary study (facies analysis, biostratigraphy, magnetostratigraphy and magnetic anisotropy analysis) has been performed on two land sections, located on the NW edge of the Val di Fine, some 15 km SE of Pisa, with ages between Late Tortonian and Early Pliocene. Val di Fine is a neogenic extensional basin in the Tuscan region, south of the Arno River, Late Tortonian in age. The thickness of the Morra creek section is about 375 m with an age between Late Tortonian and Early Pliocene. The Serredi quarry section, located about 2 km SW of the Morra section, is about 200 m thick and Late Messinian in age. The comparison between biostratigraphic and magnetostratigraphic data is in agreement with observations in coeval successions in the Mediterranean area and from ODP site 654. Recalibrations of the biostratigraphic and magnetostratigraphic results are in progress on the basis of the CK92 (Cande & Kent, 1992; 1995) global paleomagnetic time scale. The magnetic anisotropy analysis of the Upper Messinian/Zanclean units revealed a NE-SW lineation, according to the regional extensional direction. On the contrary, the Morra section shows an inverse magnetic fabric, mainly due to a peculiar mineralogical content.
