Abstract:
Lithological, sedimentological and organic geochemical data of Lower Aptian sediments from Site 866, drilled during ODP leg 143, are presented. Several organic-matter-rich levels are described within the shallow-water carbonate platform series. The origin of organic matter is mainly algal and/or bacterial and its richness may reach 34% TOC. These shallow-water organic-matter-rich levels are comparable to the coeval mid-water black shales in the Pacific. They are possibly correlated to the Early Aptian oceanic anoxic event, but their conditions of disposition are open to discussion.
