Abstract:
The argillaceous sequence identified on the inner margin of the Japan Trench (DSDP Leg 57) is in accordance with the existence of the ancient continent "Oyashio". Probably present in the Cretaceous, the continent subsided during latest Oligocene time. At the beginning of the Miocene, the reconstruction of the ocean floor led to the expansion of the role of provenance, and of that of the Japanese climate, in controlling sedimentation.
