Abstract:
Hole 1162 A produced 2.6 m (8% recovery) of mixed igneous clasts overlying a polymict fault breccia with an array of clasts that can be divided into 2 metamorphic types. It was abandoned because it was unlikely to yield fresh volcanic samples suitable for analysis. Hole 1162A is moderately to altered basalt. Hole 1162B is 9.9 m of dolomite (Unit 1) overlying a dolomite-cemented basalt breccia (Unit 2). Unit 1 is only pale pinkish dolomite; Unit 2 is highly to very highly altered angular to subangular basalt clasts in a dolomite-centered breccia. The glass sample analyzed has a Ba content at the high end, demonstrating a Pacific type mantle affinity at this site. This confirms the Indian-type mantle incursion between Sites 1158 and 1162, and indicates Indian-type mantle was present beneath this part of western Zone A for 2-3 m.y.(LEL)
