Abstract:
Site 1160 is located in eastern Zone A. Two holes were drilled: Hole 1160A produced 0.4 m of buff to medium gray aphyric pillow basalt recovered (8.4% recovery); it was abandoned because of poor drilling conditions. Hole 1160B produced 13.0 m of basalt (28.8% recovery) which are divided into 7 lithologic units. Units 1, 2, and 7 are aphyric basalt, Units 3-6 are plagioclase phyric basalts, Units 2, 4, and 6 are massive flows, and Units 1, 3, 5, 7 are pillow flows. The pillow basalts are moderately to highly altered with alteration halos around the outer surfaces of most pieces. The massive basalts appear to be only slightly altered in their interiors; 2 facies of alteration are recognized in this hole. The drill site was expected to provide a approximately 20 Ma baseline Pacific site. Basalts from this site are typical MORB derived from Pacific-type mantle, even though Site 1160 is near a seamount. The glasses from the site have Ba and Zr contents that show the basalts to be Pacific type MORB.(LEL)
