Abstract:
Pelagic sedimentary records from the northern part of the Ninetyeast Ridge can be used to understand the uplift of the Qinghai-Xizang (Tibetan) Plateau. Using the identification of foraminiferal assemblages and an analysis of foraminiferal tests, combined with the previous sedimentary, geochemical, paleomagnetic and micropaleontological data, we made an integrated analysis of ridge records since 9 Ma, represented by ODP Site 758. Some significant signals of a variable marine environment, which responded to the phased uplift of the plateau from 3.7 Ma to 3.2 Ma, 0.8 Ma to 0.6 Ma, and 0.17 Ma to 0.16 Ma, can be recognized in the records. We point out that the intensity of the Indian winter monsoon is a key symptom mirroring the tectonics of the plateau. The period marking the most important change in the environment during the late Cenozoic shown by ridge records was found between 3.7 Ma and 3.2 Ma.
