Abstract:
Two schematics of biogeographic zonation for the Early and Late Pliocene bottom sediments of the Southern Ocean were compiled based on data on calcareous nannoplankton from the cores obtained within the DSDP and ODP deep-sea drilling programs. Consideration of about 50 habitats of species and genera and assessment of the changes in the coccolith number over the area and paleoecological groups of species enabled four zones to be distinguished: polar (Antarctic), subpolar (Subantarctic), moderate (notal), and subtropical. The migrations of the zones during the Pliocene and climatic changes in selected areas of the Southern Ocean are marked.
