Much of the Red Sea basin is underlain by evaporites of a similar age (late Miocene) to that of evaporites found in the Mediterranean Sea, the interstitial waters of the cores continuously increase in salinity with depth, the coincidence of brines with evaporate outcrop, occurrence of metalliferous shales
