Abstract:
At Site 1164, the seafloor age 18-19 Ma. 1164 is the southernmost of three sites used to test the distribution of Pacific and Indian-type mantle beneath Segment B5. The purpose of this segment was to further constrain the emerging pattern of short-lived migrations of the Indian/Pacific mantle boundary. Hole 1164A 0.97 m (11.4% recovery) is composed of aphyric pillow basalt, is slightly to moderately altered, and belongs to a single lithologic unit. Hole 1164B 10.65 m (16.2% recovery) is composed of aphyric basalt rubble with intervals of basaltic breccia that is moderately to highly altered. The Ba/Zr ratio of one glass sample lies within the Indian field (1164B) defined by 0-7 Ma MORBs from the SEIRs, but the other glass sample plots within the Pacific field (1164A), suggesting that the mantle beneath site 1164 is transitional in character.(LEL)
