Cenozoic boron isotope variations in benthic foraminifers. Geological Society of America (GSA), Boulder, CO, United States, Geology (Boulder), 41 (5), 591-594, georefid:2013-035340
Abstract:
The boron isotopic composition of seawater (delta (super 11) B (sub sw) ) is a prerequisite for reliably estimating past variation of seawater pH from boron isotopes in marine carbonates (delta (super 11) B (sub c) ). Here we compose a 50 m.y. stack of delta (super 11) B (sub c) from Atlantic and Pacific Ocean deep-sea sediments, and discuss the potential effects of deep-sea pH and delta (super 11) B (sub sw) on our record. Using model-based Cenozoic pH values, the inferred delta (super 11) B (sub sw) values suggest an approximately 3 per mil increase since the Late Eocene, superimposed on oscillating variations with amplitudes of up to 2 per mil. Our estimates match existing reconstructions of delta (super 11) B (sub sw) , but call into question published fluid delta (super 11) B in halite as a recorder of delta (super 11) B (sub sw) .
